NiadeleMy name is Laura Kaufman, and I recently birthed a dream of a family owned and operated business called Niadele, which provides high quality, natural, handcrafted cosmetics that are gentle for the skin. As I nurture this business, I share the experience, lessons and expect to eventually the business operations with my two precious daughters. Even now they help where they can by making pretend smoothies for my product testers.
As a little girl, I loved watching my mom and grandma go through their skincare and makeup routines, and I believe that teaching proper skin care can boost a person’s self esteem. Having always struggled with highly sensitive skin myself, I wanted to create an alternative product that avoided harsh chemicals. |
This past year I have worked with several wholesale companies to create a mineral cream foundation that is both gentle and hydrating to the skin. I currently have eight shades of mineral cream foundation and loose mineral powder. I use a natural elderberry preservative, an antimicrobial product that can be used in cosmetics and other personal care applications. I follow good manufacturing practices. I document each experiment, save samples from every trial, and have some ten friends volunteering as my product testers.
As I develop product and test my formulas, I find the personal interaction with my “clients” to be joyfully fulfilling. My initial distribution plan is to host parties where I can interact one-on-one with clients, pampering them, giving personal demonstrations and make-up tips specific to their skin and routine needs. That personal touch sets me apart and is the foundation to building my loyal customer base. Nearing market readiness, I face a number of business overhead expenses to bring these tested products to market. Namely, I need to purchase liability insurance ($571), incorporate as an LLC ($250), purchase custom labels for my products ($200), and establish an online presence ($200). These expenses collectively total $1,221.

I have put long hours of sweat equity and invested money in the highest quality ingredients to create the products of Niadele. I am excited to see these investments turn into a profitable company this coming year. My dreams stretch into the future, and I see Niadele becoming a business that gives back and plays a part in promoting and sustaining the unique community and culture we have in the High Country by creating flexible, people-focused jobs and returning a percentage of Niadele's earnings to local for-cause organizations.
It would be a joy and an encouragement to become a SEAM recipient for the remaining start up costs of launching Niadele, totaling $1,221.
